Lagoon Beach

I was at the Lagoon Beach Hotel for a conference and when we finished in the afternoon Michele joined me for a walk on the beach. Although I often walk at Woodbridge Island nearby this was actually my first walk on this stretch of sand. First we walked towards Cape Town.



A short jetty about halfway along extends out into the sea. This gives one the perfect spot to take perfect iconic Table Mountain views.



Looking in the other direction we could see the Lagoon Beach suburb, hotel in the distance.



It's a very pleasant beach for walking: wide and flat.



One can't walk terribly far though, as one quickly reaches these barriers. When we got here we turned around and walked back up the beach.



In front of the hotel is the lagoon. Very popular spot on a sunny Sunday.



Across the channel we could see Woodbridge Island, the lighthouse just visible a little way further up.



The water was clean and clear, and not as cold as I expected.



We walked out as far as we could onto the sand bar.

Happy Dog at Woodbridge Island

I went for a walk on the beach at Woodbridge Island with my friend Sarah and her sweet dog Malachy. It was a glorious summer morning.



We walked carefully across the sand as the beach was covered in blue bottles. They were everywhere, but particularly all over the kelp.



We crossed over to the lagoon. Wispy clouds in the sky.



From here we got a great view across Table Bay to the city. Lions Head, Signal Hill and Cape Town Stadium.



Malachy went for a swim in the channel.



He's a pleasure to take to the beach - he's very well behaved, yet bounds around with such joy and happiness.



His best fun is chasing sticks in the waves.

Milnerton Beach Stroll

After a few miserable days there was a break in the weather and we headed to Woodbridge Island for a walk on Milnerton Beach.



It was lovely to be outside under the bright blue sky.



The only downside is the beach was full of litter. Way more than normal - I guess it was brought in on the tide. It was shocking to see so much plastic.



We should be seeing only this sort of the thing on the sand:




As we walked back we watched a rain shower over the city bowl.

Windy Woodbridge Island

Both desperately in need of a leg-stretch, Michele and I met up at Woodbridge Island for a stroll along Milnerton Beach. It was a sunny afternoon but there a bit of a breeze about and the water was choppy.



We walked up the beach direction Table View, soon leaving the lifesavers' club and the lighthouse behind us.



The sea was looking very clean and was a pleasant (not too cold) temperature, so we walked barefoot, paddling in the shallows.



The wind became stronger until sand was blowing across the beach and stinging our legs. We turned around and walked back straight into the wind. Phew, it was very bracing!



I was loving the way the sand was being blown over the rocks and seaweed on the beach, making patterns. Nature's abstract art...

Sunset Beach

It was a beautiful autumn day so we decided to head up the coast to Sunset Beach for a walk at sunset.

This stretch of coast lies between Woodbridge Island in Milnerton and Dolphin Beach in Table View, and is accessed from the upmarket suburb also called Sunset Beach. The first thing we noticed after walking from the parking area over the dune to the sand is that iconic west coast view of Table Mountain. It never fails to impress.



We walked right, up the coast. This beach is flat and wide, perfect for easy-going strolling.



I was loving the golden light...



... and the reflections.



At regular intervals we passed piles of pebbles. The stones are so round, rolled smooth by the waves, and vary in colour from jet black to almost translucent. It is almost impossible to resist picking up one or two!



The oddest thing happened... Delphi was just telling me that this beach is known for fossilized whale bones, that they get churned up from below on the tides round about new moon... and moments later he picked up this specimen. It is a beautiful shape with a lovely smooth patina, definitely worth keeping.



We were so busy chatting we missed the actual sunset. Twits! But we paid attention to the soft pink light as the day ended.




And hurried back along dune-top path before darkness fell.
