It's been a while since I walked along the prom. Good to be back! The strange white horses are still there.



The beach was looking rather empty and wintery.




As the sun set the skies blazed with gold, orange and pink.

The Day Fades on the Prom

We started our walk along the Sea Point Promenade in glorious sunshine.



But the days are short now, and by the time we reached Saunders Rock and turned around the sun was gone and a chilly sea mist was coming in.




And there was a beautiful moon up above.

We had a lot of rain over Easter and Cape Town has greened up beautifully. When Dorothy and I went down to the Prom for a walk we were impressed by how lovely and lush the green lawns looked.



I've missed my regular walks along the Prom. It is good to smell the ocean at the end of the day.



This time of year the light is golden.




The public pool is on winter time, which means it is closed by 5pm. After hours it is a playground for gulls.



As we looked out to the setting sun Dorothy spotted a whale blowing.

This time of year the fine days between the winter cold fronts are such a treat. I love the soft light and beautiful skies. Even though it is getting dark terribly early there is enough daylight for a quick walk along Sea Point Prom at the end of my work day.



Winter is known as the 'green season' here in the Cape. The lawns were looking fabulously lush, and I saw both geese and hadedas out and about.




Also spotted: paragliders. They were taking off from Signal Hill.



Mostly I was looking out west to the setting sun though. Goodbye day.

Sea Point Prom 2011 - Walk 6

I went for a quick after-work walk along the Prom, along the usual route.




The grass had just been mown... love that smell!




I noticed that the loos were locked up for the day already. This is a bit of a nuisance for the many people who continue to use the Prom 'after hours'. I guess the city is operating on winter hours already. At least drinking water is available at the fountain!



Gorgeous golden light this time of year, but as soon as the sun disappears there is a nip in the air. Winter is coming!

Sea Point Prom 2011 - Walk 5

Vanessa and I left a sunny city bowl to take a walk in Sea Point and found ourselves in a thick sea mist. We walked the usual route in the damp and gloomy conditions. It was kinda fun walking in the mist but very chilly!

Sea Point Prom 2011 - Walk 4

We've been having another heat wave in Cape Town, temperatures around 38C for the last few days. Horrid! When Vanessa suggested a walk on the Prom I wasn't at all sure about it, but what a good idea it turned out to be. There was a heavenly cool breeze blowing.



The prom was unusually quiet, but as expected, many people were enjoying the swimming pool.




We had a short walk but did lots of chatting. I'm pleased Vanessa has resolved to get fit and take regular walks here - if I can join her I'll find it easier to motivate myself to get here every single week. That's the plan!

Sea Point Prom 2011 - Walk 3

Well now, so much for walking the Prom every week!

This year I've really struggled to get into any proper exercise routine. Here we are almost at the end of February and this is only the third time I've managed to get down to the Prom. Tsk tsk. My plans to be super-fit before the Whale Trail (only two weeks away now) haven't worked out either - I'm just hoping I have enough basic fitness left that I manage the hike okay. And I plan to do several walks in the next fortnight to get my lazy legs used to moving every day again - starting today with my usual walk along on the Sea Point Promenade!



As always, once I got myself down to the coast it was an absolute pleasure to be on the familiar route, nicely cooled by an onshore breeze. Conditions were perfect and there were many swimmers and surfers in the water.



There is always something going on on the Prom. Today there was a wedding party having photographs taken.



I also paused to watch three very excited happy collie dogs on the beach. They followed their owner onto the rocks and into the water.




I walked all the way to the end and then all the way back, and felt both relaxed and energized afterwards. Good stuff!
