Table Mountain: Tafelberg Rd

Date: 8 April 2009

Location: Tafelberg Road

Walkers: Dorothy, Tarryn, Summer, Richard, Helen and Michele

We set off from the parking area at the start of Platteklip, and walked along Tafelberg Road towards Devil's Peak.

Behind us, there was a great view of Table Mountain. We could clearly see the way up Platteklip Gorge from this angle.

Beyond the barrier, parts of Tafelberg Road are disintegrating and being covered by rock falls from above.

As we rounded the bend below Oppelskop we came to the part of Devil's Peak that was ravaged by fire last month. It was amazing to see how close the fire came to the suburb of Vredehoek.

The slopes above and below us were black and lifeless and still smelled of fire. It was extremely eerie.

The ubiquitous cyclists whizzed past us on the road.

We stopped to look out over the city, then headed back the same way, into the setting sun.
