Side Note: Casual Walking Sandals

My old walking sandals are completely worn out. I'd been struggling to find a pair that I like to replace them... the sandals at all the big outdoor stores are so ugly and/or uncomfortable. I finally had success at Green Cross though with these lightweight and super-comfy pair. They probably won't do for scrambling or trail walking on the mountain, but are perfect for short walks and strolls in the forest, around Kirstenbosch or on the prom.

Devils' Peak: Lower Slopes Loop

Date: 15 January 2010

Location: Devil's Peak from Vredehoek

Walkers: Helen & Michele

*** Route plotted here ****

For other walks done on these slopes check out the Vredehoek archive here.

On a very windy afternoon we set out from the quarry for a walk on the lower slopes of Devil's Peak. We went right, following the lower path and walking straight into the south-easter wind. It was pretty hard-going!

We took a turn to the left and continued up the hill.

This path took us quite close to Tafelberg Road, with Oppelskop above. The views across the slopes and down to the city were lovely.

The path lead round to a very green bushy section of the mountain - it looks like this area must have escaped from the fire earlier in the year. Then the route began to descend into the wooded area of Deer Park.

Below a stand of silver trees it looped to the right and headed back. We were now back on the lower road we'd turned off earlier.

The walk back was much easier with the wind at our backs!

St James to Muizenberg to Kalk Bay

Date: 9 January 2010

Location: St James

Walkers: Dorothy & Helen

**** Route plotted here ****

Previous walk in this area here.

We set off from Dorothy's place in the middle of St James towards Muizenberg, along Main Road.

There was a lot of holiday traffic on the road, slowed down further by the road works. I'm not sure why more people don't take the train. This Muizenberg-Simonstown line along the coast must be one of the most scenic train routes in the world.

The mountains loomed above on our left.

We passed a row of amazing papery trees. I wonder they are?

I love the grand buildings along here: the Herbert Baker-designed Rust en Vrede, the old Natale Labia Museum and the mansions on Boyes Drive.

As we got into Muizenberg we passed Het Posthuys museum in the small thatched cottage, and then the rather elegant station building. After stops at a second-hand furniture store and a second-hand bookshop we made our way to the beachfront. The area was upgraded a couple of years ago and is full of colour and character. If only they'd knock down that nasty ol' sky-rise.

The beach was busy with folks enjoying the lovely weather and the cool on-shore breeze. We turned around here, heading back towards St James, this time following the catwalk.

This concrete walkway extends from Muizenberg to St James beach and runs between the railway line and the rocks. While it is lovely to be next to the sea, I particularly like looking towards the mountain and the houses of St James. I can see Dorothy's house! *waves*

At St James we went through the subway and back onto Main Road, and continued onwards to Kalk Bay. The hedge alongside the road here has been trimmed recently which has opened up the view. Simon's Town is across the bay.

After a bite of lunch we ran our errand in the village and then walked back to Dalebrook tidal pool for a refreshing swim. What a good day out and about!

Back to Mouille Point

Date: 5 January 2010

Location: Mouille Point

Walker: Helen

Previous walk in Mouille Point here.

I had a little bit of time to kill before meeting friends for drinks so took myself for a quick walk along the promenade in Mouille Point, doing a circuit around the lighthouse.

It was the hottest day we've had this summer - so far!

The sea was surprisingly rough considering it was such a still day. The waves were crashing up and over the barrier. I watched some kids enjoying the water and was myself grateful for the cool damp sea spray.

Although the strip is mostly all high-rises now there are still some smaller buildings. Behind them one can see Signal Hill with Table Mountain and Devil's Peak in the distance. I live in such a beautiful city!

And then there is the new Cape Town stadium. It is huge and towers like a giant mushroom or flying saucer behind the rows of apartments.

I think it is crazy to have built a sports stadium in this location. Yet, seen in its entirety it is a rather pleasing shape. I'm keen to see it up close and, if my application for tickets is successful, will attend a World Cup soccer match there later this year.
