Pipe Track: from Kloof Nek

Date: 13 April 2010

Location: from Kloof Nek

Walkers: Dominic & Helen, with doggies Henry and Sharky

*** Route plotted here ***

Dom and I set off from the top of Kloof Nek, following the Pipe Track - the popular contour path that runs along the Twelve Apostles. Unlike the last time I did this walk, the weather was perfect this afternoon... it as a golden Autumn day and Cape Town had never looked lovelier.

We followed the meandering path across the hillside until we were right under the rocky buttresses of Table Mountain. Such an unusual view of the landmark from the side and behind.

There were a few ups and downs on the route, but most of the path was dead flat, through the fynbos. Very soon we felt very far away from the city.

Our two happy and excited dogs had the best time!

One the way back we could see some mist rolling across the Nek.

And the sunset was spectacular.

Oh my gosh! That SUNSET photo is SPECTACULAR! It looks almost like an abstract painting, Helen!

We haven't walked the pipe track in a long time, partly because it's "far away" from us :-) and partly because of all the muggings and such-like. But it looks very beautiful.

Thanks, I took so many pics of that sunset... it really was a special one. The light that afternoon/evening was amazing!
I know about the pipe track's reputation and of course its always a good idea to be mindful of safety, but I've never seen anything dodgy goings on or felt unsafe in any way there. It is pretty well-used by dog walkers and runners. So I encourage you to give it a try again when you're in the area. The latter part is particularly lovely (the stretch from Woody Ravine past Slangolie and round to Corridor. You can start from Theresa Ave in Camps Bay. Great place to walk!
