Lion's Head

Date: 4 February 2009

Location: Lion's Head

Walkers: Helen and Delphi

This walk gets one's heart rate up within minutes as the path (starting from the parking area on Signal Hill Road) circles up towards the peak at quite a stiff gradient. Delphi and I set off for an after-work leg-stretch on a windy Wednesday afternoon.

Rounding the first bend, we were rewarded with a view down to Camp's Bay. There was hardly a soul on the beach, and the sea was choppy, due to the howling southeaster wind blowing down there.

A little further on we stopped to admire a stand of beautiful silver trees, before the path narrowed and the steps took us on and up.

We looked down to Clifton Beach below.

And back towards Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles.

The path and the peak above us were very rocky.

Sea Point, Signal Hill and Table Bay came into view as the path circled on.

With the aid of ladders and chains we kept climbing.

There are several stone pines high up on the slope.

Following the recommended route, rather than the short-cut, we headed round to the front of the peak.

Here we clamoured up some steep rocky steps to a small plateau.

We took a rest here, and admired the view of Table Mountain and Devil's Peak, covered in a cloudy table cloth. We looked up to Lion's Head but due to lack of time, decided not to tackle the final ascent this time round, and headed back down the way we'd come up. We'll be back soon!
