Elgin Open Gardens - Part 2

Date: 31 October 2010

Location: Elgin, in the Overberg

Walkers: Dorothy, Michele, Vanessa, Tarryn, Summer, Dominic & Helen

See Part 1 of our tour of Elgin Open Gardens.

Second garden on our tour: Fairholme. This lovely home is on a hill, with expansive views across farmland to the hills in the distance.

We explored the area around the house first. Here the garden is fairly formal, with neat hedges and walkways and beds of white roses. Masses of lavender, salvia, plumbago too.

Next we wandered down to the sunny pool terrace.

Beyond that we reached the rose-covered pagoda walkway. I visited this garden a few years ago when this was newly planted... now that is is mature it is truly magnificent.

In the beds below: clumps of different colour irises and other flowers.

Once past the pagoda we continued along the peach-pit walkway to the far reaches of this large garden.

Wow, lots of colourful flowers in these beds.

Delicate lovely flowers, all of them.

From under the tress we circled round past the pond...

... to the sloped lawns. We sat for a while, enjoying the view.

Hungry for lunch now, we completed our walk through the garden of Fairholme, and drove on through to The Valley.

Here, our final stop on our tour: Heaven Scent Garden & Nursery

After a picnic lunch we strolled around this rambling garden and plant nursery. It's set on a slope, surrounded my tall trees.

We saw bright pops of poppy...

... other splashes of colour ...

... and many, many fragrant roses.

Couldn't choose a favourite even if I had to!

After a full day out we were finally out-gardened and decided to call it a day. Will be back for more open Elgin gardens in spring 2011!

I just can't imagine the amount of work that goes into a garden like the first one in this post. But... it must very very nice to have such a big garden with slopes and a pond to just be able to relax in.
